Your House Is About to Work a Lot Harder

There’s something about those first cool fall mornings that makes us want to open the windows, grab a sweatshirt, and pretend winter isn’t right around the corner.

Unfortunately, if you live in Minnesota or Wisconsin…

We know what’s coming. ❄️

And your house knows it, too.

As temperatures drop, we close the windows, turn on the furnace, light fireplaces, and eventually ask our homes to protect us through another Midwest winter.

A little preparation now can go a long way.

Before the Cold Arrives

Fall is a great time to tackle some of the things that are easy to forget during the warmer months:

  • Have your furnace or heating system checked.
  • Clean gutters and downspouts.
  • Disconnect outdoor hoses and prepare exterior faucets for freezing temperatures.
  • Check your roof and exterior for visible damage.
  • Have fireplaces and chimneys inspected or cleaned as appropriate.
  • Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
  • Check around windows and doors for drafts.
  • Make sure everyone in your home knows where the main water shutoff is.

And while you’re walking around your property, think about what may have changed this year.

Did you add a shed? Finish your basement? Complete a renovation? Make a significant purchase or improvement?

Those can also be good reasons to check in with your insurance agent.

Maintenance and Insurance Have Different Jobs

This is something we think every homeowner should understand.

Homeowners insurance is generally designed to respond to certain sudden and unexpected covered events. It isn’t designed to take the place of regular home maintenance.

That distinction can become important with things like deterioration, wear and tear, long-term leaks, or damage that develops over time.

Enjoy Fall—But Get Ready for What’s Next

We can’t prevent every frozen pipe, winter storm, or unexpected event.

But we can prepare.

So enjoy the changing leaves, pumpkin everything, and those glorious few weeks when the Midwest temperature is just right.

Just don’t forget to get your house ready for what comes next.
