Fires can happen quickly and without warning. Whether caused by lightning, electrical issues, cooking accidents, or wildfires, the aftermath can be devastating. At Aspire Insurance Group, we believe that knowledge, preparation, and knowing who to call can make all the difference.
This guide walks you through how to prevent fires, stay safe during a fire emergency, and what to do after a fire if your property is damaged or destroyed.
🔥 Before the Fire: Prevention Is Key
1. Install and Maintain Smoke Alarms
- Place smoke alarms on every level of your home and in each bedroom.
- Test alarms frequently and replace batteries at least once a year.
2. Create a Fire Escape Plan
- Identify two exits from every room.
- Designate a meeting spot outside your home.
- Practice your escape plan with the entire family.
3. Fireproof Your Home
- Keep flammable materials away from heat sources.
- Clean your dryer vent regularly.
- Store matches and lighters out of children’s reach.
- Install fire extinguishers in high-risk areas like the kitchen and garage and know how to operate them.
4. Prepare for Wildfires
- Clear brush, leaves, and other vegetation at least 30 feet from your home.
- Trim overhanging branches and clean gutters regularly.
- Use fire-resistant landscaping and building materials.
- Seal vents and eaves to prevent ember intrusion.
- Pack emergency go-bags with essentials (see “The 6 P’s”: People, Pets, Papers, Prescriptions, Personal devices, and Plastic).
- Know your evacuation routes and practice them.
5. Review Your Insurance Coverage
- Make sure your policy includes coverage for fire, smoke, and wildfire damage.
- Understand your deductible and your coverage limits for rebuilding and replacing personal property.
- Ask your agent about coverage for Additional Living Expenses (ALE) and debris removal
6. Create or Update a Home Inventory
A detailed home inventory helps make the claims process smoother and faster.
- Document your belongings room by room with photos or video.
- Include item descriptions, values, and receipts if possible.
- Store your inventory in the cloud or a fireproof safe.

🚨During a Fire: Act Fast
- Get out immediately — don’t stop for belongings.
- Stay low to avoid smoke inhalation.
- Feel doors before opening them; use alternate exits if doors are hot.
- Call 911 once you’re safely outside.
- Never re-enter the home until fire officials say it’s safe.
If you’re under a wildfire evacuation order:
- Follow official instructions and evacuate early.
- Bring your emergency go-bag and pets.
- Close windows and doors behind you to slow the spread of fire.
🏡After the Fire: What Comes Next
1. Make Sure Everyone Is Safe
- Seek medical attention if needed.
- Do not enter the structure until cleared by fire officials.
2. Contact Aspire Before Filing a Claim
- We’ll help assess the situation and guide you on whether to file a claim and what your policy covers.
- Filing too early without full documentation could delay your claim.
3. Document the Damage
- Take photos and video of all affected areas and items.
- Do not discard anything until you’ve spoken with your adjuster
4. Prevent Further Damage
- If safe, board up windows or secure doors.
- Keep receipts for any emergency expenses — many may be reimbursable.
5. Understand Temporary Living Coverage
Your policy may include Additional Living Expenses (ALE) to help cover housing, food, clothing, and other necessary costs while your home is being repaired.
6. Keep Track of Everything
Save all receipts and create a log of conversations, decisions, and updates related to your recovery and claim.
