12 Years Later: What Building Aspire Has Taught Me About Leadership, Growth, and People

Twelve years ago, Aspire Insurance Group was just that — an aspiration.

It was a belief that insurance could be done differently. More personally. More thoughtfully. More honestly. It was a bet on the idea that if we put people first, built real relationships, and stayed committed to doing the right thing, we could create something that would last.

Like any business owner will tell you, the journey has not been a straight line.

There have been seasons of growth, seasons of uncertainty, hard decisions, big lessons, and moments that stretched me in ways I never expected. But looking back, I can say this with confidence: building Aspire has taught me just as much about people and leadership as it has about insurance.

So, in honor of 12 years, here are 12 lessons I’m carrying forward

1. Bet on yourself.

There will never be a perfect time to start, grow, change, or take the next step. At some point, you have to trust the vision, do the work, and believe you are capable of figuring it out along the way.

2. Relationships are the real ROI

Policies matter. Premiums matter. But relationships are what build a business that lasts. The trust of clients, team members, carrier partners, referral partners, and community members is the greatest return we could ever earn.

3. Growth requires change.

You cannot grow and stay exactly the same. Every new season requires new thinking, new systems, and sometimes a new version of yourself as a leader.

4. Culture is built daily.

Culture is not a poster on the wall or a statement on a website. It is built in conversations, decisions, standards, follow-through, and the way people feel when they are part of your team.

5. Hire for character.

Skills can be taught. Systems can be learned. But kindness, integrity, ownership, and humility are much harder to train. The right people make everything else possible.

6. Communication solves most problems.

So many issues can be prevented or repaired with clear, honest, timely communication. Silence creates confusion. Clarity builds trust.

7. Technology should enhance relationships, not replace them.

Tools can make us faster and more efficient, but they should never take away the human side of what we do. In insurance, people still want to feel known, heard, and cared for.

8. Leadership is stewardship.

Leading a business is not just about growth. It is about responsibility — to clients, employees, families, partners, and the community. What we build affects more people than we realize.

9. Failure is a teacher.

Not every decision works out. Not every idea lands. Not every season feels like progress. But every challenge has something to teach us if we are willing to be honest and keep learning.

10. Impact matters more than income.

Financial health is important, but the deeper reward is knowing your work helped someone feel protected, prepared, or more confident during a difficult moment.

11. Success keeps evolving.

What success looked like in year one is not what it looks like today. Over time, success becomes less about proving something and more about building something meaningful and sustainable.

12. People are always the point.

At the heart of it all are people. Clients trusting us with their protection. Team members building their careers. Families depending on the work we do. Community members cheering us on. People have always been, and will always be, the reason Aspire exists.

Looking Ahead

Twelve years later, I am grateful.

Grateful for the clients who have trusted us. Grateful for the team members who have helped shape Aspire into what it is today. Grateful for the partners, mentors, friends, and community members who have supported this journey.

Most of all, I am grateful for the reminder that business is never just business.

It is people. It is trust. It is growth. It is service. It is showing up again and again, even when the path is not perfectly clear.

Aspire began as a vision. Today, it is a community of people working together to protect what matters most.

And 12 years later, I still believe the best is ahead.
